the seo yoast generated one for google etc. now do I need to have a visible one for net surfers? I have never actually read a site map on any site I’ve visited or even looked for one. is it really needed for any good purpose?

A “readable” sitemap used ot be good for SEO way back before Google and the rest started reading XML sitemap files. They were basically never meant ofr humans to read, but just a way to get all of the sites pages linked on one area so that search engines know about them instead of having to crawl through links to find everything.

So, in my opinion, there’s normally no real need for a sitemap page if your navigation is in good shape. I’m the same as you where I wouldn’t ever normally look at a sitemap page, so I fully understand that the majority of people would be the same.
