Does Not Work Properly

I can only get into the website Dashboard with the direct connect option https://www.xxxx.wp-login.php. I then set up the users and passwords and log out – I get a ERROR 404 – Page Not Found. I then try to log in using the username and password I just put into the website and it does not work. Please help – this is driving me buggy!!
