• Hi there & Happy New Year!

I did a website for a client, who has however done most of the layout customization herself.
When the new Evolve version was made available, I updated for her. I thought the layout looked different after, but was not too sure where.

Then a few days ago, after not looking at the site for a while she discovered the changes, which included the green buttons & the different background of the text on the bootstrap slideshow + the green buttons around “read more”, etc … & was quite incensed.

I tried to explain the changes, but I could also not understand why the settings made via theme customization, which I suppose, if I am not mistaken are not written in the main theme style file & so do NOT overwritten by an update … especially regarding the mentioned sections, ie the text backgrounds on bootstrap slideshow, green buttons around “read more”, etc get overridden!

Moreover, I also had 2 child themes I made, but one could also see the buttons around “read more” & the slideshow text backgrounds where changed to that of the new theme, conspicuously different, in a number of ways!
I had hoped the child themes would save me, but discovered they could not.

The only satisfactory way to calm the lady, who wanted me to guarantee no such changes would occur again (!) was when I discovered I could get back the previous version 3.4.4, which immediately restored the layout.

I also had noticed several changes in appearance on a different site, whose client was also happy with then, then 3.4.4 appearance. Then, the green buttons & main navigation text was different.

    1. Was the change in that form planned? If so how can one at least avoid locally made settings via theme customization NOT getting overridden by those in main theme? I do not remember getting such changes on other sites where I use different themes
    2. what about child themes ….?
    3. Regarding the upgrade from 3.4.4 to 3.5.0, did it involve any security-related changes? If not, I was thinking of leaving the site with the previous version 3.4.4. If there where however any security related changes, can they in any way way be integrated into 3.4.4?
    4. Is there any way of maintaining the exact default appearance of 3.4.4 (as in its screenshot, etc) with version 3.5.0?

    Thank you & kind regards

  • Hi,

I’m having the same issue with the child theme not overriding the parent using v3.5.0. I’ve tried both the older @import method and enqueing per the WP codex instructions but neither seem to work. @import worked fine on another theme so I’m pretty sure I’m following the right steps and was hoping to find out what I was doing wrong but lots of other questions appear to have been addressed but not this one!

Were you able to resolve your issue?

    Thanks ??

    Hi debbietomkies

Since I have not got any response from here yet & failed to restore the “old” look of the previous version 3.4.4 after updating to 3.5.0, I was forced to revert to the previous version, which restored the implemented localization.

Only that was acceptable to the client. ??

I have also not yet got a response as to whether the update was at least partially security-related.

If it is NOT, I intend to leave it at 3.4.4, the old version.

It would have been good if the new version did not override the local customization, at least in the child-themes, but well …
I do manage a number of WP sites with different themes & as much as I remember, the customization in child themes or where custom styles are provided for in the theme options getting touched/overridden.

    Regards ??
