Hi Kathy. I have no experience running a multisite at all. I set one up in January just to make sure the plugin didn’t break (and it didn’t). But I would be happy to add any wpmu-specific features you think may be missing.

Is it preferable that each subsite be able to use the same email settings, share the same Google account, the same outbox?

Should a subsite be able to override the network site settings, if it wants to?

Kathy, I’ve done a little research and I think this proposed functionality would make this plugin a good fit for use on multi-site:

    • ability for network admin to define smtp settings for network emails – this seems to be a minimum requirement
    • subsites will use network admin settings unless they choose to override the smtp settings for a personalized solution – this provides good customization in a customer-focussed environment
    • ability for network admin to prevent, optionally allow, or force a sub-site’s use of the network-defined smtp settings – this provides tighter control in a business or education environment

    What do you think?

I think it would be great, I could def use it!!

George, I can only talk about Postman in the Postman forums. I believe you have run into Google security issues and your only solution is send mail with Postman SMTP configured for OAuth 2.0.

As for this thread, I would be appreciate any direction you can offer for making Postman work well in multisite.

Hi Jason, Thank you for the response. For some reason I am not getting notified of responses even though I have the “Notify” checked.

I am still trying to determine the best way to handle mail for a multisite and all of the deliver-ability problems. Your proposed functionality sounds good. Are you planning on going ahead with this?

    Hi @kathy_goss

Yes, I’m working on enhanced functionality for the 1.6 release. Not sure which part of WordPress you are referring to by the “Notify” ?

Feel free to email me at jason -at- hendriks -dot- ca.

@kathy_goss, btw, @virtualgeorge above is using Postman as is in a multisite setup successfully. He has each subsite define its own SMTP settings. Is that what you want to do as well?

Hey @kathy_goss, I used a couple others that “used” to work well but Postman works great with all email providers I have tested with so far. I have it on multisite and it auto activates on all my new & existing sites without a problem.

I had a few issues that were my own fault from just using things without reading the docs but Jason was quick to help me figure out what I did wrong, awesome support!!!

My users are liking the setup wizard and how it tests your settings & ports and recommends what settings to use so you don’t have to guess or use trial & error.

    Hi @postman SMTP,

Great. Ok, I Network Activated the plugin. Where do we set the default SMTP settings for the network wide email delivers the the multisite though? I can not seem to find the multisite base settings (yet)?

Then, each subsite can ad their own to overide?

    If so, that is perfect.

    Please let me know.

There are no site-wide settings yet. I wanted to see if there was any demand for it before I wrote it. I will count you as a vote for it.

    Hi @postman SMTP,

Yes. That would be ideal per your descriptions above.

    Great. Thanks.

    I look forward to it.

I am interested in the network wide default settings

    @postman SMTP

Oh…let me add it would be good to be able to:

    1. Allow for the default settings overall network wide to all subsites as a option to turn on and off.

    2. And also allow for a option to only enable certain subsites with the default settings too (selectively).

    3. Being able to suppress and/or remove the notice at the top of pages and also in the Dashboard area if Postman is not configured yet at the top of the admin pages would be good too (perhaps with a remind later option and time options to remind like in a few hours, days, weeks, months, or never etc).

Having both options would be good to turn on or off in the multisite settings.

Just another thought on that . . .

    Thanks birdog!

Yes vote on the multisite options below, too.

    • The ability to set a default smtp at the network level.
    • Just a note, my gmail settings in developer console don’t like working with my different subsite subdomain names. I have the network working well at the mydomain.com set up. But when I want to turn it on for sitea.mydomain.com it appears I am going to have to create a new client ID.
    • Add a setting from network level that will let us enable whether each site can override and use their own smtp server.
    • Turn off the notices on the dashboard if a site is using the network default.
