  • Would you please be more specific about “doesn’t work”?

I’ve tried both pages (thanks for providing them) and plugin works just fine on both.

    Hi Stoil,

Sorry my description was ambiguous. On the page for the second link, the first 3 footnotes function correctly, but the remainder only appear within printed double brackets instead of a footnote. It seems this is because they are duplicates of the first. Duplicates work OK in the first link above, but not in the second. I hope that makes sense?

I’ve tried clearing my cache and reloading, but it doesn’t help.

    Thanks,

    Shane.

P.S. This seems to be because the first footnote in the second page contains a link and text, and then those *not* appearing corrcetly contain that same link, but no text. Could this be a bug?

Sorry I have no idea what you mean.

There is a WP instance, please reproduce the problem there so i can take a look, the footnotes is installed.

Sorry Stoil, I don’t understand how that instance above will help.

If I may try again please –

If you click on the second link in my first post above, and scroll down to the caption for chart 1, you’ll see a link appear to the energy institute, placed in double brackets because a footnote wasn’t generated.

If you then scroll to the bottom of the page where 3 footnotes do appear, the first one contains the same energy institute link, but also with some text I placed after it.

To me, it appears that the first footnote has blocked the others from being created because they contain the same energy institute link.

Edit – I see now how that instance *might* help, but I suspect I’d have to install the same theme and plugins. I’ll give it a go.

    I can’t duplicate the problem here: https://glamorous-tarantula-428375.instawp.xyz/test/

I’ll have to investigate this further when I get time.

Hey shanewh, it will help me understand the problem. For instance – right now not only links but also other footnotes markup is not represented as footnote. But it looks like some blocks are used there – right now the plugin only parses post content and acf fields which are using specific hook. Meaning that content generated with something else is not going through the plugin, so you will see “raw” markup. But there is no way to guess that, as i can only see parsed html from your site, but not how it was generated.
Plugin only gets the text between whatever markup symbols you as admin have decided to use, it does not treat links differently – for it its just text. It only checks if there are repetitions (again – as pure text). But either way it MUST strip the markup no matter what – that is currently not the case, which makes me think of some other content generator.

So in order to help you ill need a way to reproduce this, which will in turn give us an idea how to properly solve this – if it is a bug ill track it down and fix it, if it comes from some content generator, i can provide you with possible solution or implement some integration in the plugin.

Long story short – if i can not reproduce it, it will be near to impossible to fix it unfortunately…

That’s cool, I understand. Thanks Stoil, I’ll check in again when I’ve made progess or fixed it.

    Hi Stoil,

The problem was caused by Yoast SEO. I’ve disabled it for now, and not sure I need it. I don’t use Google’s because I don’t want visitors tracked.

Getting late here, so I’ll investigate further later.

    Interested to hear your thoughts?

Thanks for that other WP instance; it was very useful. If you visit it atm (https://glamorous-tarantula-428375.instawp.xyz/test/), you’ll see the problem occuring at the bottom of the map of Australia. If you disable Yoast, it’ll go away.

    Shane.

    Hey Shane,

Thank you for digging into that. It looks like its a bit complicated, as its not just yoast, but some weird combination of that theme and yoast – for some reason none of these blocks content goes through the footnote plugin. It will work with most of the other themes even if yoast is active…

Have to debug that more thoroughly in order to catch what the heck is wrong there.

Bizarre! Let me know if I can help at all, and best of luck,

    Shane.

You did quite enough! Just be patient – ill try my best to catch that one asap …

Hey Shane, please try the new 2.5 version …

    (@shanewh)

Yeah that’s better – works with Yoast SEO enabled.

    Thanks Stoil, good work.
