Domain expired cannot log in, no password for recovery email either, how can I r

  • Hi, my domain, self hosted www.ads-software.com site expired yesterday. I don’t know login and recovery email on file is so old I do not have the password as am travelling and laptop crashed. Really stuck and need to renew asap as the site is well known and we are running international awards.

    Please help, thanks.

  • Your domain, your hosting and your WordPress install are three different things. If the domain is expired, you’ll need to renew that through the company you registered it with, and it should then point back to your WordPress site.

    If you mean you’ve purchased a new domain and need to set up the WordPress site to use it, you can change some details in the database through your hosting control panel that would allow you to log in.

    If you can clarify what exactly you need to do, we’ll do our best to help you out.

    THank you Shellbot. It’s a self-hosted site with www.ads-software.com. Host: bluehost. Domain with Wild West Domains, spoke to them three times yesterday and they insist they cannot help renew the domain as it’s a WordPress issue. I’ve had my domain for about 5 years now. The problem must have arisen – it’s expired – because reminder emails were going to an old email address which I cannot access. I can’t access or log into WordPress either although I CAN get into my own blog BUT you cannot renew from there! Normally I renew with WordPress through PayPal but have not had a reminder this time. That’s all I want to do.

    Ok I found a thread from a few years ago that is full of people having the same confusion with Wild West Domains telling them to renew through WordPress. You can see that thread here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/renew-domain-name

    Self-hosted WordPress, downloaded from wp.org, has absolutely nothing to do with domain registration. However, wp.com does offer domain registration and as you can see from the last post in that thread, this is apparently what caused the confusion for at least one person.

    So the question becomes, have you at any point had an account on wp.com rather than wp.org, and is that where you bought the domain? If so, and that’s the account you’re unable to access, it’d be worth going through wp.com support as that’s a different thing entirely to this forum.

    I cannot thank you enough, all sorted, the thread was so helpful, Yahoo reset my pw and I got in to WordPress.com to renew the domain for my www.ads-software.com self hosted site after retrieving the pw for my old Yahoo email. Big thank you Shellbot! x
