Domain mapping and CPANEL

  • Hello,

    1. I am using inmotionhosting VPS with CAPENL
    2. Dedicated IP and my own nameserver setup (NS1.MAINDOMAIN.COM and NS2.MAINDOMAIN.COM
    3. Setup wordpress on https://WWW.MAINDOMAIN.COM
    4 MULTISITE setup
    5. Added Domain Mapping Plugin
    6. Modified A Record of MAINDOMAIN.COM on WHM as …
    *, 14400, IN, A, SERVER IP ADDRESS
    7. In MAINDOMAIN.COM CPanel, parked a new domain (NEWDOMAIN.COM)

    So far, here is what I have:
    A. If I go to MAINDOMAIN.COM, WP shows up (works fine)
    B. If I go to NEWDOMAIN.COM, WP shows up (at this point it is the parked domain which is simply loading the MAINDOMAIN.COM (I assume it is fine)

    Problem 1:
    NEWDOMAIN.MAINDOMAIN.com goes to the “default server page” for CPANEL
    How do I fix this, to load NEWDOMAIN.COM?

    PROBLEM 2:
    Since I am using wildcards in DNS, any *.MAINDOMAIN.COM, shows the “default server page”
    Should I worry about this, or leave it the way it is?

    I assume the rest of the problems point back to problem 1, but here it is just in case:

    Problem 3:
    I setup and configures multisite for the NEWDOMAIN.COM
    Problem: All the links are set to
    NEWDOMAIN.MAINDOMAIN.COM which will give me a page not found.

    I solved half of the problem.
    Site needs to also be setup to understand WILDCARD subdomains.
    If anyone is interested, here is what you need to do:
    Go back and delete the wildcard you created in the DNS entry. This will prevent you from creating a wildcard subdomain in cpanel, because the DNS already exists.
    Now in cpanel, go to subdomains, and create a new one (*) and save.
    That’s all.

    Now the site loads fine, but everythung is linked to “NEWDOMAIN.MAINDOMAIN.COM”
    If you click on any of the links, it works and points to to NEWDOMAIN.COM/…
    But the fact that it actually loads NEWDOMAIN.MAINDOMAIN.COM is not a good strategy.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Does maindomain.com/wp-admin/ still bring up WordPress Dashboard? It must. If it doesn’t check things like redirection in .htaccess

    newdomain.com should (before you do any domain mapping) load WordPress, displaying the same page as maindomain.com.

    asdf.maindomain.com should bring the WordPress “do you want to make a new site” page. That’s a good test of “wildcard DNS” working.

    Have you used WordPress to create a site “newdomain”? If you configured multi-site in “subdomain” mode, the site newdomain would have URL newdomain.maindomain.com

    Get all this working, before you attempt anything with domain mapping.

    Hello,

    I have a similar situation, therefore seeking assistance. My primary domain (www.domain.com) already has a blogger blog, and I have created a wordpress blog on a subdomain in cpanel (wp.domain.com) and migrated blogger-hosted data into the new server. Now all i want to do is switch the domain names, i.e make the subdomain into the primary domain so that the previously held url links and traffic lives up with the new wordpress blog. But I’m not sure how to do such DNS changes? can someone help?
