Domain Mapping Multi Site issue

  • Is there no possible way to work around setting up the installation in a folder path instead of the root when you are using Domain Mapping?

    I have multiple websites that I want to run with one installation of WP because I have authors writing for different websites and I need everyone to have one login.

    I want to install WP at site1.com/wordpress and not necessarily have site1.com built on WP. So that I can eventually move site1.com to WP and continue building new sites on the WP platform like site2.com.

    This seems like common thing but I could not find any resources on this leading me to believe it is not possible. I have this concept working in Movable Type but I wanted to port everything over to WP. Is that possible?

    Multisite does not currently support being installed in a subdirectory. See: #19796 on the WordPress Trac.

    can you migrate the non wordpress site into a folder like site1.com/site1/?
    If so you could then install the wordpress in the root. and point site2 there.
    Then use redirects to foward users to the correct site.

    So would you recommend building sites on their own install for now and porting them over to the single install when that functionality becomes available?

    I can’t install WordPress in site1.com because we don’t want to build that site in WordPress right now or tamper with it at all. That would be an entirely different project and out of this scope as it is already a large site that is well established.

    But I also don’t want to continue building in Movable Type if I know that I will have to change it to WordPress as soon as this #19796 gets worked out. Do we have any idea when this functionality will be available?

    mcleek21 – What about this?

    Build WP in a subfolder as single site.

    Import MT and get it right.

    Then move WP to root (making sure to search/replace site1.com/wp to site1.com) and go from there?

    Thanks for the suggestion but I don’t have authorization to make any changes to site1.com so I can’t really go that route at this time.

    I think I will go ahead and build out the new site that I am making in its own install and hope that this new functionality comes to WP soon so that I can bring the other 8 sites from MT to WP without changing site1.com to WP.

    Really the only option right now that would make the transfer worth it is if I could set up our 60+ users over 8+ domains with one login and permissions set to manage all of it without making any change to root. We can do that in MT right now and want to change to WP but it isn’t worth it if we have to sacrifice the root folder or make multiple installs.

    Thanks for your help, I am still open to suggestions if there is another way to get me up and running on WP with the above requirements.

    *sigh* Yeah, not yet.

    You can’t move MT out of root I bet for the same reasons.
