• I am trying to do domain mapping using the plugin ‘WordPress MU Domain Mapping’. I have downloaded the latest version of the file from www.ads-software.com today. I followed all the instructions and I can’t get it to show a domain when I try to add a new one. When I go to the site dashboard that I created then ‘tools’, ‘domain mapping’, type in the domain name, I tick ‘Primary domain for this blog’ and then hit ‘add’ but nothing shows up. I only get a message saying the ‘New domain already exists.’. I should see a list of added domains at the bottom of this screen that shows I have added the domain name but I do not see this. What am I doing wrong, please?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • That plugin is not necessary anymore. The domain mapping is done within the multisite itself. You also need the ‘sunrise.php’ file installed properly for domain mapping to work within that plugin.

I’d remove the plugin and hope it cleans up after itself as it exits.

Of course, you need to be running multisite WordPress and your hosting control panel may need to know about the domain being mapped.

Much of domain mapping will also be done at the WordPress ‘Network level’.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I am running multisite.

So once I remove the plugin how do I change the URL of my site?

What do you mean by my hosting control panel may need to know about the domain being mapped?

Currently, the site is a subdomain https://www.learnerflow.co.uk/jackalcreative/

I want it to be https://www.jackalcreative.co.uk/

    How do I do this?

Does anyone know what @jnashhawkins is referring to in his comment? It needs further explanation before I can follow this as an instruction.

This article explains it very well…

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/wordpress-multisite-domain-mapping/

Here’s a slightly different take on this if you need to change the ‘network’ domain name. Consider the main, topmost, first domain ever assigned name to be the main network domain.

    https://halfelf.org/2014/changing-domain-name-multisite/

Mika calls the above ‘the multisite master’s (super-admin’s) litmus test’… I agree. Learn this one well.

Siteground did a good job explaining this also…

    https://www.siteground.com/kb/change-domain-wordpress-multisite/

Just keep in mind they are talking about Siteground so you’ll need to ‘think it through’ substituting your host and their system for Siteground. The more you see the easier this becomes… Not that it’s hard! It’s just ‘more involved’.

Backups! Do good backups before you go changing things. Backups are super important.
