Domain Question – GoDaddy

  • Hello,

    I have a multi-site install and have a blog at https://subdomain.domain.com.

    I have another domain (www.anotherdomain.com) that I want to point to that subdomain and have the domain “stick”. Does this require domain mapping? Does GoDaddy support this?

    Any experiences with this would be much appreciated. I have downloaded the Domain Mapping plugin for MU, but I don’t know if that is the answer.

  • Godaddy don’t usually allow their customers to use Multi-site as subdomains, they only want them to use sub-directories. I believe theres a way around this if you buy a dedicated IP but I’m not sure.

    However if you’ve managed to set up you multi-user network using sub-domains on godaddy and its all working fine then thats good.

    Yes the domain mapping MU plugin is how you map a top level domain to your blog. The way I done this was by following this tutorial:

    But FIRST as a godaddy customer, make sure you go into your hosting admin and point the domain you want to use to your hosting account root directory. The domain mapping plugin above will take care of the rest. So, to explain further you need to go into your hosting control panel, select ‘DOMAINS’ (the middle button above your IP address) and now add the domain you want to use to the root of your hosting (/). It usually takes godaddy about an hour to go through but this will point the domain to the correct place for the domain mapping plug to work.
