I will try to be as clear as I can here – I made a series of mistakes when deploying this website but I did it with the best of intentions.

I have a client domain called scenica1a.org that was running on a very old version of Joomla and needed to be rebuilt.

I created a cPanel account for the client using the domain scenica1a.org

I then purchased scenica1a.com and added it to the cPanel account and installed WP in the subfolder /www and proceeded to setup WP and then started to redevelop the site using WP.

I created a redirect so that users going to https://www.scencia1a.com were redirected to https://www.scencia1a.com/www

That was all good and everything worked fine and after 2 months of recreating content the client was ready to point their .org domain to me. This is where it goes sideways.

Today the domain was pointed to me and the site would not use the content in the .com/www folder.

I contacted cPanel and was told I needed to move the WP install from the www to the public_html (doc root)

I backed up the home folder and the mysql DB, logged into WP and changed the directories in Settings – General removing the /www and saved.

Then using cPanels file manager moved the WP files from /www up one level to the public_html folder.

At the same time, I removed the cPanel redirect to /www

I then opened a browser window and went to the .com domain – 403 forbidden error

Then I went to the .org – blank screen

After fussing with god knows what I managed to get the website to load but it was seriously hosed up. I ready hundreds of posts where people moved WP without incident. So now I am seriously confused and panicked beyond belief.

Out of sheer panic I did a cPanel restore of the home directory and the database and that restored the website but without the /www redirect.

Now my client is effectively down and I don’t know where to turn.

I simply want the same content served from both the .com and the .org and now I am desperate for a solution. Because this could be complicated I would be willing to pay someone knowledgeable in advance to help me fix this. To further complicate things the client is a personal friend.

Thanks in advance for your time.

BTW if this is not the correct forum, please accept my apologies and tell me where to move it to.

    Wayne

  • First off, have alook through Moving WordPress. That will tell you what to do with the site to move it to the main root directory.

When that’s all up and running, go back to cPanel and add the other domain as an alias.

Remember that you don’t have two domains running on the same site. It’s one odamin, but the second one will show a page and link everything back to the first domain. The best thing to do is decide which one you want to use full-time and use that as the base for your site.

    Hey Catacaustic,

    First off, Thank You!

So in the “Moving Directories On Your Existing Server” section, it states “If you want to move WordPress to its own folder, but have it run from the root of your domain, please read Giving WordPress Its Own Directory for detailed instructions.”

I because I am moving the files from a sub-directory to the root, I am not understanding how that section applies to me or if it even does.

If you are moving all of the files, it doesn’t apply. That’s only when you want to leave the main files in the sub-directory and run it from the main domain root.
