Is there a plugin (or a file I can edit) so that the name of the page the user goes to does NOT display in the address bar?

If user1 goes to page titled: This Is The Life of Bob
And in the address field it is displayed:
    https://wp.mydomain.com/this-is-the-life-of-bob/

I would like it NOT to display anything after the …..mydomain.com/

Is there a plugin or can I edit a file?

    Thanks for the assistance!

  • What if you want someone to share your post https://wp.mydomain.com/this-is-the-life-of-bob/ and they cannot because there is no link?

There is no plugin I know of or file you can edit, as this is how the internet/browsers function. It required the URL of the document you wish to view. The browser cannot simply guess which file you wish for it load.

However, you could display websites like how you’ve described using HTML Frames. You would have to redevelop your theme to incorporate Frames, though as I’ve never attempted it. Frames are an older way of developing sites, sometimes using Frames for certain types of sites can be useful, but for general browsing experience, I wouldn’t try to do this.

This is a private site and only logged in subscribers will view the pages they are allowed to view.

The reason I ask is because I don’t want them to guess what a different’s page link may be and try to view it without having permission to. Plus it just looks a bit nicer to just have the name of the site and not the following name.

I was mainly wanting it too look cleaner.

It also will not be indexed by GOOGLE, so I suppose I could make the name of the page NOT the name of the file… use some type of unobvious link.

Thanks for your quick reply! ??

But if anyone does know of a plugin or a file that can be edited to make the name of the page not be shown, would be appreciated!

    Thanks again!

Then you should set up the site so only logged in subscribers with the appropriate rights can view the page, regardless of whether they know the URL. Security through obscurity never works.

Just having the domain name of your site in the address bar while the actual page changes is actually very disorienting and bad for usability. If you really insist, you can use frames like harmck suggested.

If you don’t want Google to index your site, use a robots.txt file to prevent the google crawler from indexing it.

Thanks Fonglh and harmck for answering.

I did check the page security and even putting in names that I know other pages are did exactly that…. wouldn’t let them access them.

I do have the box under privacy checked to not have GOOGLE index it.. but I will take the extra step and put in the robots.txt as well.

    Thanks again for your response!

@manderson: Great, could you mark this as resolved?

Regarding frames, I wouldn’t use them, it was the description of your problem led to that suggestion. But as you wish to have a private blog, that explanation would have been clearer. Luckily Fonglh had the right idea. I would actually be against the use of frames, again for usability reasons as Fonglh mentioned.

Definitely against frames myself.. even in normal design! ??

Thanks again for all your help with this.

    Will mark resolved! ??
