Double sitemap on GSC

    Hello and happy new year to all!

    I have a Google indexing issue for my website since 10/16/2021. Google indexed a minor part of the website which is a relatively small website, it consists of 200 pages.
    While I trying to figure out the problem I have noticed that Google Search Console shows in discovery section both Yoast’s sitemap and WP one.

    /sitemap_index.xml
    /wp-sitemap.xml

    Can more than one sitemap be the reason of indexing problem?
    At my previous experiences, GSC shows only Yoast generated one.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Having two different sitemaps with the same copy of URLs included on them submitted to Google Search Console might create ambiguity and variance in the Google Search Console report.

    We suggest deleting the /wp-sitemap.xml (WordPress core sitemap) and just submitting the main Yoast sitemap sitemap_index.xml for consistent results.

    Hello,

    Thank you for the reply. I have Yoast 17.8 installed, and wp-sitemap.xml is supposed to be turned off by Yoast. Am I wrong?

    How GSC discover wp-sitemap.xml which I certainly did not submit?

    That’s correct. WordPress core sitemap will remain to deactivate after Yoast SEO is enabled.

    As for Google Search Console, the sitemap will not auto-submit to Google Search Console unless it is submitted manually. For now, I would suggest that you remove the wp-sitemap.xml and just let the Yoast sitemap be submitted and crawled.
