Download Counter for images, files etc

  • Is there a way to build your download counter and display it in post? For example I upload images, zip files to my post and create links (or download buttons) for users to download the files. However I want to keep track of how many people have downloaded.

    Can this be done in wordpress 3.0? Custom function perhaps in functions.php?
    Any help would be appreciated.
