My site only sells downloadable digital products, and every now and then I receive a message from a customer saying that the site complains they need to be logged in to download, despite them already being logged in. This only seems to effect customers who have created an account, and not guest purchases. Sometimes logging out and back in again resolves it, but not always. This is especially frustrating because a significant portion of my customers never receive the order confirmation emails, so I always encourage them to create an account to access the downloads.

    Any ideas?

    Hi @kfutter,

This problem could be due to a caching issue on your website. When a page is cached, it can sometimes show a logged-out state to a logged-in user, causing the error message. I recommend installing a plugin like WP Rocket that excludes certain pages (like the “My Account” page) from being cached.

Regarding the order confirmation emails, please check if the emails are being marked as spam. Using an SMTP plugin can improve email deliverability. Also, please review our email sending FAQ for help, troubleshooting steps and solutions here: https://woocommerce.com/document/email-faq/

Please let us know how it goes or if you need further assistance.

Thanks for that, @shameemreza. Unfortunately our caching is at the server level as part of Nginx, so fiddling with WordPress plug-ins isn’t going to help (happy to be proved wrong, however).

The email situation is also out of our hands, as we are forced to use GoDaddy’s SMTP relay network, and at any given time, a large number of these servers are on a whole bunch of block lists. All the sites I run from that particular VPS suffer the same, WordPress or not. That said, I know for a fact that the order confirmation emails do often end up in the customer’s spam/junk folder, so if you could recommend a good SMTP plug-in to help reduce that, I’m all ears!

Is it possible for you to reach out to your host and check if they can help you with that?

We usually don’t recommend specific third-party plugins, since we are unable to provide support for them ourselves.

We usually recommend searching on Google or the plugin page on the site and following the guidelines here to make sure it is a good plugin.

Having said that, I suggest you take a look at WORDPRESS MAIL SMTP PLUGIN, as it does meet the requirements mentioned on the guide and might be a good fit for you.

But please note that if you need support for it, you will need to contact them, all right?

Please let us know if there’s anything else we can do to help.

    Have a wonderful day!

Thanks for the SMTP tip. Coincidentally, I spent a good part of yesterday configuring Sendlayer and WP Mail SMTP, so I have my fingers crossed that this will help with that particular problem at least.

As far as the caching goes, it’s an unmanaged VPS, so the ball’s in my court with that one.

    Hi @kfutter,

I’m glad we were able to help! I will mark this thread as resolved. Should you have further inquiries, kindly create a new topic here.

Meanwhile, if it isn’t too much to ask for – would you mind leaving us a review here?

It only takes a couple of minutes but helps us tremendously. It would mean so much to us and would go a really long way.

    Thanks!
