DOWNLOAD MONITOR: Downloads Not Working – Have tried EVERYTHING!

  • Hi all!

    I have been successfully using Download Monitor for a year now and LOVE it! I switched my blog to a new server and downloads are not working. To make sure downloads worked smoothly, I basically installed the plugin and imported the downloads through the ADD DIRECTORY option within Download Monitor.

    THIS IS WHAT I HAVE DONE TO TRY TO FIX IT

    I have checked all permissions and they are all set to 755, including downloads.php and download_monitor.php.

    I have resaved all permalinks

    I have checked my .htaccess file and it’s all good

    I have pasted the actual URL of the download into my browser and it works

    I’ve pasted the actual URL of my uploads folder into my browser and it brings up a blank page as expected

    Please help! I feel like I’ve tried everything!

    Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

  • FYI – I have been uploading the files separately with an ftp client, placing it into my own directory, then using “Edit File URL” to locate the file. When I upload the file directly using the Download Monitor, placing it into the default directory, the download link works correctly.

    I tried the FORCE DOWNLOAD option. Although the file now downloads successfully, the download count is not incremented.

    Also – I’m using the [download_page] directive, and I’m trying to place custom fields on the page. I’ve added a custom field to my download as “license”, with some text in the value. I’ve also added a “include_fields” custom field to my downloads page. But nothing shows up.

    Anyone getting the temp folder missing error on uploading a new download?

    Related to the bug above, I am geting

    Warning: realpath() [function.realpath]:

    Errors only on new or updated urls.

    all the old downloads work for some reason but as I went to rename a document and change the name I am now getting this error.

    SOLVED: it was a php.ini setting (base dir) and missing tmp dir.

    I love the concept of this plugin. I don’t see another download manager that even comes close to what this plugin offers. Kudos.

    My downloads only produce 404 errors (I checked it again before posting this and now I am getting “Download path is invalid”). When I navigate to the download.php I get a “Download path is invalid!” I checked Line 484 of download.php but it does not contain /* Debug.

    I have now spent three days trying to get this plugin to function correctly. What do I try next?

    Hallelujah! I got it fixed. The .htaccess file had an error in it. I’m guessing it is absolutely necessary to spell everything correctly! Silly fingers.

    I am doing something wrong, I’m sure, but cannot find my error. When I click on the file to download it, I am just directed back to the Downloads Page. https://cliffdavies.com/downloads is the download Page. The process I followed:
    Uploaded the zip file and then expanded
    Activated the plug-in
    Uploaded files that I want visitors to download from my computer to the /wp-content/filedown folder
    Created a new Page in WordPress and named it ‘Downloads’ with a Permalink of https://cliffdavies/downloads
    Added the [download_page] to the Download page
    In Download Monitor – Categories – added 2 categories
    In Download Monitor – Configuration – Custom Download URL – added https://cliffdavies.com/mydownloads as the custom URL
    Saved changes and then re-saved Permalinks under Settings
    Edited the .htaccess file to inlude the following lines:
    ptions +FollowSymLinks

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule ^mydownloads/([^/]+)$ wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=$1 [L]

    I then used the Add Directory feature of Download monitor and pointed to the relative path – the files were found.
    That’s pretty much it as far as I can remember. I was really hoping for some simple step-by-step instructions for a very simple and basic install with a download page as I am a complete newbie at this WordPress stuff and struggle to understand the more technical pieces (for example, it took me 2 days to figure out what a ‘relative path’ was).
    I would appreciate any help as I am at the point where I am about to just forget about having a Downloads page altogether :(.
