Downloadable product link broken

  • actually this is for WP 3.8.4 and WooCommerce 2.1.12.

    hi folks hoping to get some idea of what’s wrong here. i’ve got a site using dowloadable purchases.

    the customer can select and purchase the product. transaction goes through Paypal fine, and the download link is sent in semi encrypted form via email. but that customer’s link does not reach the website where the materials are downloaded. however the link i’ve put in for the WC product URL download link (the unencrypted one) works fine if that’s pasted into a browser.

    interestingly the order states that the product has been downloaded whenever anyone tries to click on the link. so WC is getting the information that the link is being used but it results in a 503 ‘service unavailable’ error and fails.

    i need some resolution on this or at lease some way to troubleshoot it. right now i’m groping in the dark. updated all my plugs yada yada, no change. i don’t want to upgrade to latest WP 3.9.2 as i’m nearly certain it will break something that was working fine before.

    update – i’ve followed some advice and gone to WP Settings to re-save the permalink structure, as that has been known to solve issues with WC links. no joy.

    DEBUG is turned on to true already in config.php, but i can’t find the log file, or WP doesn’t think there’s an error if so.
