• Recently the webdesign/devlopment company we’ve been using haven’t been upkeeping our site and have actually lost another one of our sites to being hacked…

We’ve contacted them multiple times about backing up our main site or doing anything but they’ve gone silent but from our last chat they’re pretty much trying to hold our company hostage.
I’ve not worked in web-based work in about 4-5 years but I thought i’d try and protect us.

I have access to our site’s wordpress dashboard as an admin but I was wondering if there are any guides on how to download the website as a local copy to use?
The website is a front to a large database of 10000s of users and items so I assume there’s a pretty big SQL database sat in there somewhere. If the local copy could still be functional that would be ideal…

But if not just an image that we could restore later would be ok.

  • The way I back up my WordPress site both to transfer for local development and for archival purposes as a backup in case I need to restore it is by using a Backup plug-in. I use Duplicator. It is pretty reliable and can backup the site along with the database into a file. Once backed up you can download either one or both into a zip file.

There are others such as Back up Buddy, and UpDraft Plus. Just such for “Backup” or “Clone” in the plug-in directory.

But Duplicator is very simple to use. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help.

    Hi @plibble,
you can find instructions how to Backup at this page https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_Backups

I confirm, Duplicator is a great plugin, but if your site is very large you will need the Pro version.

Another plugin that you can use is Akeeba Backup (site clone, root + database) https://www.akeebabackup.com/products/akeeba-backup-wordpress.html

I’ll come back with an update once I’ve gone through this or if I get any problems
