We have had a self hosting wordpress since 2008. Love it. However, our current host is going out of business and I need to migrate to our new host (AT&T) asap. I am using filezilla to download and was shocked to learn that wordpress files under /public in the root directory are 10.6 GB. It is taking me days to download and upload. Is this normal?
Second, as I do not understand the WordPress File structure it is difficult for me to narrow it down to something more manageable. Any recommendations on how to clean my site up to something more manageable.

It will be easier for you to import your site to a local installation on your computer and then remove unwanted files, extra copies of images, delete/ reduce revisions, etc. so that the size of your entire site may come down. Once everything is to your satisfaction, you can move your site to your new server.

So 10.6GB seems possible to you. Do you thinking removing all my plugins and the reinstalling them on the new server would be worth the effort in terms of size reduction vs. the time to reinstall?

Quite possible, depending on how big your site is. However, if you have not tried to optimize it earlier, quite a large chunk of it could be garbage. That’s why I suggested to install the site locally and try optimizing your database. Additionally, if your site is image-intensive, you may also find multiple unwanted copies as well as heavy images that can be optimized.
