Dreamweaver vs. FTP featuring permissions & Apache 2.2.8

  • I am having trouble understanding something about setting permissions. I have installed XAMPP, which has Apache 2.2.8, PHP 5. I am running this on my MacBook Pro in OS 10.4. I am also using Dreamweaver 8, and trying to work with WordPress 2.5.1. I am using CuteFTP 3.05.

    When I use my FTP client to change permissions on a file or folder in the web root site folder, then view the permissions settings of that file or folder in the “remote” site in Dreamweaver, the permissions are set to 0.

    When I use Dreamweaver to set the permissions to anything then view them in FTP, they are the same as what I set them to last in FTP, Dreamweaver does not affect the permissions I see in FTP.

    It seems like Dreamweaver and FTP are not using the same User or Group perhaps, so how do I make sure that DW, FTP, and Apache are all looking at the files in my www root using the same User/Group?

    I’m kind of new at this, please bear with me. I really need to get this sorted out quickly.

  • Huh. I use Dreamweaver 8 extensively, and it does not show permissions in the remote (server) view. And I’m not sure what control you have over the server such that permissions set in your FTP program are not the same as what you’d set in Dreamweaver.

    The question is: do the permissions you set in Dreamweaver work on the server?

    My preference is to set permissions in an FTP program, but the bottom line is whether the permissions actually “take” on the server.

    Thanks for the reply. So if you are in remote view, and you right click on a file or folder, you don’t see an option to set permissions? It should be in there…

    It doesn’t seem that the permissions I set in Dreamweaver stick in my local server, however, I can use the FTP client and even the OS to change permissions and then they will stick.

    I am mostly concerned because while using the Apache server that came installed in the Mac, and until I installed Xampp, Dreamweaver and the FTP client both played nice together.

    Is there anyone out there who knows of any problems or reasons I should avoid Xampp?

    Ah, right. Yes, I get the permission-setting thing. I just thought you meant the that permissions were displayed without looking at that, as they are in FTP programs.

    No idea re Xampp. That *is* odd that DW and your FTP client were no longer fine after the Xampp install. Maybe do a search for it (Google or another search engine)?

    Thanks… I am going to ditch xampp and just upgrade to leopard and use the default apache/php that comes with it alone. ?? At least I know it will work.
