Dropdown does not show placeholder in chrome / firefox

I am using the standard dropdown selector in the top right corner of the referenced website. In Chrome and Firefox, the select element does not display the first option as a placeholder text (it works in safari). I’ve tried a bunch of things including adding selected disabled to the option element but nothing seems to be working, and the issue seems specific to the select element generated by the plugin. Would you be able to make a suggestion on how to get the first option to display as a placeholder cross-browser. The situation seems a bit odd and I’m wondering if the js is interfering with expected behavior in some browsers. Thanks!
