I seem to be having problems upgrading to 5.2.2.

Firstly, something during the update process seems to be causing me to drop plugin-related database tables.
Secondly, all my pages & custom content types get converted to “post” content type.

This happens consistently on multiple WordPress installs on my webserver. Unsure if its the update interacting with my webserver config, or similar plugins/themes on my installs, but in general it has been repeatable on the sites I administer.

For now, I have to rolled back to an earlier version of WP from backups.

  • Are these custom plugin tables or plugins that can be found in the WordPress Plugin Repository? If they’re plugins in the Plugin Repo maybe someone here could replicate the issue you’re having. If so, which plugins?

That being said, I personally haven’t seen or heard anything about an update dropping plugin tables.

What version did you update from?

    @pbiron Upgrades is from 5.1.1.

@howdy_mcgee Probably the most repeatable table being dropped are the WooCommerce ones.

If not just the tables being dropped, content that uses the standard wp_posts table lose their post_type. Every page, revision, attachment, & custom content type gets converted to a standard blog. It’s really odd.

Someone suspected it might be related to poorly coded themes and plugins, but I got the issue to repeat on even a smaller site I host including one that only had 5 plugins not made by Automattic: UpdraftPlus, Shortcodes Ultimate, Divi Booster, Comet Cache Pro, Classic Editor with the rest being WooCommerce and WooCommerce Automattic plugins.

Thanx for providing the info about the version you updated from and the answer to @howdy_mcgee ‘s question re: plugins.

Sorry to hear that you’re having this problem but I haven’t been able to replicate it.

I created a small site with WP 5.1.1, about 10 different plugins (the only one from your list being Classic Editor). I then created various posts with post_type != ‘post’ and created a “custom” table (did that part manually, i.e., it wasn’t actually created by one of the installed plugins).

I then updated to 5.2.2 in /wp-admin/update-core.php without problem: post_type’s were not changed and the custom table is still there.

I then repeated the process but updated to 5.2.2 via WP-CLI, with the same result…all was fine.

Since the release of 5.2.2 yesterday I’ve also updated ~30 other sites (some via automatic update, some via WP-CLI) with no problems.

As unlikely as you think it is I, too, suspect that the problem is with one of the plugins you’ve got installed.

Sorry I can’t be more help.

I have problem too. There is some error. The dashbord dont looks like before many functions are missing and nothing works.I dont understand why someone is saying that this is the best platform to built your website. It is not!Because it just dont work. There is no support 24/7.Also i didnt go for update.I dont need any updates.Hoster did that automaticly.

Maybe the common thread here is the hosting provider. Have you reached out to their support and see if they have noticed anything regarding other WordPress sites they host?

After additional testing the problem with dropping my tables seems to be associated with the Database Upgrade process.

If I hit [continue] on the “Database Update Required” prompt.

It leads to the following page full of dropped table errors and a site that was previously working before, completely breaks.

Eventually I was able to get this sample site to Update without dropping tables by continually restoring from backups and trying re-trying the Database Update process until it went through without error.

Not sure what caused it to fail so much, but this was the culprit.

Based on that 2nd screenshot something is definitively wrong, because the tables shown there as not existing haven’t been a part of WP since version 2.2 (since about 12 years ago).
