• HI all – I’ve recently purchased a real estate business and the existing website is in Drupal. I want to install WordPress via cPanel and use that as my business site. As it’s a real estate site I doubt using a plugin to migrate from Drupal to WP will pick up listings etc so what I want to do is install wordpress and do all my site building then, once everything is set up, I want to repoint the domain to my wordpress site.

So is it possible to just install wordpress without specifying a domain, using a temporary domain or using a pending domain so I can build the new website then redelegate at a future time? Or is there a more elegant solution to this?

  • Yes! Developing a staging site with a different domain is done all the time.

You can actually install WordPress in a subfolder then when you are ready, point the root right to the directory. Users never see the /newfolder/ in the url if configured correctly and you don’t have to move your files.

Here is one way to do it…

That looks perfect Kim! Just one question though – there is a main domain delegated to the hosting account which is currently pointed at Drupal. When i try to install WordPress it asks for a domain. How do I do the installation without using the primary domain? And once that’s done and i have built my wordpress site do I need to then point that domain at the new WordPress site?

Sorry if I sound uninformed techwise but once I understand what I need to do I pick the ball up and run.

I’m sorry. Not knowing how your hosting works my answer may not apply.
If Drupal is similar to WordPress you should be able to put the site in a sub-folder

How are you installing WordPress? Through an “installer” in your cPanel?
or Manually?… It sounds like the first. If that’s the case it would be …

But like I said, much can depend on the type of hosting you have. If you do not have a standard cPanel with that type of control I would contact my host.
