• We are in the process of switching from blogger to wordpress. We imported all of our posts onto our new site….of course it wasn’t flawless….so we are fixing all of those posts. The problem is….we are still posting on blogger during the month of December since we are still working on getting the kinks out of our new site. I recently imported the newer posts on blogger into our wordpress site…and that is when I realized it wasn’t working as it was supposed to. It says that it will recognize posts that have already been brought over and it will not duplicate them….unfortunately, it DID duplicate them!! We now have double. I

What should I do? How can we prevent this duplication of posts?

Two other questions – will our links transfer over? So….if I linked to another post on our old blog….will those still work when they are on the NEW site?

AND – most of our pictures did not transfer over….do you know why?? When we look at it in the backend, it looks like they are there…but they aren’t all showing up on the frontend.

ANY help/advice would be much welcomed! Thank you!!!!!

Are you trying the automated Blogger importer or are you importing from a Blogger export file?

If you’re getting duplicates with the automated importer, you might want to give the file importer a try instead. The file importer has been around longer than the automated importer, so I have a feeling that it might work better in this case.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to clear out the existing duplicates, so you’ll probably have to reinstall WordPress (delete the database, create a new one, and run the /wp-admin/install.php file again).

In case you don’t know, here’s a guide on how to get an export file of your Blogger blog: https://www.google.com/support/blogger/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=97416

JAMES!!! You rock! Thanks for answering. Yes, I tried the automated Blogger importer. I wondered if that was the problem….but since I am SO new to WordPress….I wasn’t sure how to try the file importer. Thank you for the guide on getting an export file from my Blogger blog….I just learned how to do that yesterday….it was surprisingly easy! ?? As for importing from a Blogger export file….could you tell me how to do that? I can only find where you click on “Blogger” and it does it for you.

Thank you SO much for your help!!!

Hm, you’re right they took that out of the importer for some reason.

WordPress.com has the file importer, so it’s possible but it’s going to be a bit of a two-step process.

Basically, you’d import the blogger file to a free WordPress.com blog, then export the blog, then import that WordPress.com file to your self-hosted WordPress blog.

It’s definitely worth a try at least.

OK….so lemme see if I am following you….you are basically saying that I need to “convert” over to a wordpress file…..and by running it through a free WordPress.com blog first….that will make my posts more compatible for www.ads-software.com? Then would I have to do the automated import from a WordPress blog….on the back-end of my website?

Another question I had was that when we did the Blogger import….it didn’t bring over all of the images/files, etc. Do you think that by doing it the way you suggested above….would insure that those pictures are all brought over? The pictures all show up on the back-end/dashboard of our wordpress site….but on the front-end or what our readers would see…they don’t translate over.

Here’s a third question….we linked up to past posts quite often….when we switch over to our wordpress site, those URLs obviously change….will wordpress convert those over for us or do we need to go back into every post and fix all of those??

You seem to know what you are talking about….so I am just throwing those questions out there. ?? Thank you!!

    Almost, here’s what I’m suggesting:

    1. Export the Blogger blog https://www.google.com/support/blogger/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=97416

    2. Import that file to a free WordPress.com blog. Go to Tools/Import in the Dashboard, select Blogger, and upload the file to import (don’t use the automated import).

    3. Once that’s done (you should get an email), go to Tools/Export in the Dashboard and export the WordPress.com blog.

    4. Now, go to Tools/Import in the self-hosted WordPress blog, select WordPress, and import the file.

I know it’s a bit crazy, but I think it might work (for the images too), and I’d least say it’s worth a try.

As for the links, I’m afraid you’ll have to manually change all of them, no matter how you import it.

    Hi,
I got a similar problem in my WP 3.0:
Imported 5.000 Posts and 8.000 Comments from my Blogger using the automatic tool in WP, then kept working on parallel on both (Blogger and WordPress) while I was setting up WP.
After that I did a re-import, trusting that it wouldn’t creat duplicates as it said at the bottom, and I quote:
“If you attempt to re-import a blog, duplicate posts and comments will be skipped” … but I ended up having more than 9.000 Posts and more than 15.600 Comments!

The site is now public but most old content is duplicated.
    Any advice welcome.

    Jose
