    I use the Duplicator regularly to copy my website to a localhost for testing before upgrading plugins and WordPress.

    Since upgrading the Duplicator plugin and WordPress to the newest versions, however, I get an error when testing the connection. Still entering Name:”root” and Password:”wordpress” as before. Leaving “Action: on either fields does not change the outcome. Getting a “Fail” on “Server Connected” and “Database Found”.

    Any help on how to make the Duplicator work again is appreciated.

  • Hey @asig,

    Checkout this section on the FAQs I believe it may help with this issue:
    -> Browse to: https://lifeinthegrid.com/duplicator-faq
    -> Find section: “3. Troubleshoot=> Database Issues”

    Hope that helps!

    I did check this out and tried different settings, but without success.

    Up until recently the “root” and “wordpress” fields worked. They still work on Duplicator packages that I created a month ago. Only the most recent packages refuse to connect.

    Any insight into this?

    If you want to submit a help ticket I could have a look at it. Click on Help > Get Support > Look for Basic Help.

    Where is the Help->Get Support menu? I can’t find it.

    In the Plugin under Duplicator, if your using version 0.5.8

    I have the same issue with a “Fail” result when activating “Test Connection”. Tried changing password to ‘No’ instead of leaving it blank, using different database names other than ‘wordpress’ with and without underscore. I’ve also tried creating a new database, user and password. Nothing works. Is it safe to use an older version of Duplicaor like 0.5.0?

    Forgot to say that I’m using Duplicator to clone my website to Instant WordPress

    Continue to have problems. Created a ticket and received the answer to put the user and database name in (instead of “root” and “WordPress” as previous). Tried this and it still refuses to connect to the database.

    It used to be so easy and elegant, now it does not work anymore since upgrading to WordPress 4 and the latest Duplicator plugin.

    Any suggestions on how to overcome this issue?

    Hi @asig,

    What host are you using… This is a bit odd I have gotten reports from over a dozen providers that it works with-out issues and it has worked on all the various providers I use. That code has also not changed in the last few releases. It seems as though your host has changed something on their servers or your credentials aren’t matching what they should be. If I remember the help ticket you submitted you were trying to enter in “root” for the database name which I’m pretty sure isn’t want you named your database. Have you contacted your host to make sure your using the correct connection string?

    Hi @tcphil,

    Who is your host provider? As I mentioned above I’m getting large report of success from others and have not had any issue with 3 different providers I use myself. This seems to isolated to a credentials issue. Have you contacted your hosting provider?

    Cory,
    thank you for following up. I was on a business trip for the last week and just got back to solving this.
    I should mention that I am trying to use Instant WordPress to copy my live website to localhost. I do this regularly for backup purposes and to test plugin and WordPress upgrades before executing them on the live website.

    When I tried it again today in Instant WordPress with “WordPress” and “Root” it did connect. It appeared to install the local version of the website ok. When pressing the “Run Update” screen it went ok.
    After that:

    When selecting “Save Permalinks” it prompts to upgrade the Wodrpress database. If acknowledging, it then displays Your WordPress database has been successfully updated! After that it behaves the same as described below when selecting Test Site.

    When selecting “Test Site” the site does load, but with many items (such as the header) missing and without the ability to log in with any saved user id’s

    My host is Bluehost. The website is https://www.mycbc.ca.

    Hey @asig,

    There is an FAQ topic that talks about the issues with the “upgrade database”. To be honest without being able to debug your setup I’m not quite sure what else to try at this point or why your running into these issues…

    To solve this issue, follow these steps:

    – Shut down instant WP and your browser completely.

    – Locate and open the following file with your preferred text editor: [yourInstantWPInstallDirectory]/iwpserver/pms_config.ini

    – Scroll down to the [mySQL] section, change the port to 3306. And save the changes.

    – Start instant WP

    Use the login data provided by InstantWP in the DUPLICATOR installer page, the connection should work now. Follow the normal installation.

    Thanks ssarrawnt!
