    Hi there!

I am using Smart Slider to set a dynamic post slider for a client and everything works great, however my question is regarding image cropping in an image layer. You see I use featured image of a post for blurred background as well as to show the same image on the left side in an image layer: https://prnt.sc/12riphz

Now, those featured images in posts are not always the same size (some are 4:3, some are 4:3 and some are 16:9), so I decided to show the featured image in the layer as 1:1 (400×400 px) but hoped that your plugin could CROP it, so that images are not squeezed or widened.

You see I found the CROP option in a STYLE tab of Image Layer and I thought that would do the trick, but no matter what option for CROP I choose (On, Scroll, Mask), there is no difference in the way image is presented? Images are still full image images squeezed into 400 x 400 square … which does not look good, especially if the original featured image is 16:9.

So, can you please explain what does CROP function do and how I can achieve the same effect as “Fill” effect for background image? Is this something that PRO version of Smart Slider adds? I could not find documentation about it anywhere.

    Please let me know ASAP.
    Thanks, Danijel

    Hi @dmarin!

In the Free version you should use the background images of the columns, to have them with the same size:
    https://smartslider.helpscoutdocs.com/article/1813-column
In this case the height of the column defines how big the image will be, and the image covers the column.

You can use the paddings of the columns when necessary, if they wouldn’t have the minimum height you would like to have. For example on mobile phones you might need it, because of the default wrap after:

Thank you very much for your quick response. I will try that.

But can you please explain what does CROP function in image layer do?

    Thanks, Danijel

    At the layer style:
    https://smartslider.helpscoutdocs.com/article/1812-layer-style
you can add a “height” value to your image layer. That will make it smaller and you can crop it. But this isn’t really good for your usecase, because this cuts in a way, that the top part of the image will stay visible. With columns the image’s center will be in the column’s center, which usually is better.

Crop was rather made for our older system, where we only had absolute positioning:

but with default positioning it isn’t that useful.

@nextendweb_gabor , I tried does to use featured image as background image of the columns, and removed image layer, but then nothing is displayed. ??

My question for you is: does PRO version give an easier option to fill/crop image layer? So that any aspect ratio could be cropped and shown as 1:1?

    Please let me know.

In the Pro version we have an Image area layer:
    https://smartslider.helpscoutdocs.com/article/1849-image-area-layer
but you shouldn’t really need this, because the column should work out the same way too. Please rather send us an export of your slider:
    https://smartslider.helpscoutdocs.com/article/1728-export-import-slider
    through our form:
    https://smartslider3.com/contact-us/support/?topic=Editing&version=Free&slider-export=slider-yes
and we will take a look at it!

Also, the image area layer and the column too, works that way, that the height is rather fixed. So we aren’t using 1:1 ratio to make it go smaller, but the width is changed and the height stays. Then on smaller screens you can make the height smaller, but it will still be a fix pixel value.

Ok, I was able to set it up as column background photo, but I will see if I will purchase the PRO version. Thanks again for your help! ??
