E-mailaddress instead of username on registration

Usernames are sooo 1995-2005ish! Why can’t i choose to let my subscribers not have to choose a username?
I use the following plugins which are great:

– https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/register-plus/But i still have to force my users to choose a username on registration. Is there some kind of hack that i can add to my functions.php that lets my new subscribers type their e-mailaddress on registration without even seeing the username text field?
