“earlybird” discount

thanks for a great plugin – which we have been using for some 3 years!

We have a big event coming up in autumn this year and want people to register and pay via our website.
For such events it is fairly common to give a “earlybird” discount. This means that you get a discount if you register and pay up to a predetermined date.
Now, I can enter a fixed discount and an expiration date but still the registrant has to enter a code. This should not be necessary; this should grant the discount as long as the current date is before the expiration date.
I did get it working by using a “code” discount and then programming the date comparison – but it would be great if this would be working “out of the box”.
