  • Do they have the requirements as listed ?
    * PHP version 4.1 or greater
    * MySQL version 3.23.23 or greater
    * (optional) The Apache mod_rewrite module, for the cruft-free URI functionality

I have now checked with Earthlink. They support PHP 4.1 but do not support MySQL.
Is there a workaround or is that the end of it?
    Thank you

I’m afraid it’s the end of it with Earthlink…..WP must have mysql.
If you are in a position to change hosts or set up a new account somewhere, here are some places to try:
    https://wiki.www.ads-software.com/Known%20Good%20Hosts
If not, then for a blog tool that needs just php (no databae) then try here: https://www.pivotlog.net/
    Good luck ??

I hope somone can help me with this…
I am trying to install WP on my server at Dreamhost. I copied everything to the server exactly as WP unzipped (ie folders the same and everything) When I use the quick set-up to make the wp-config file, I can get through that, where it says “You have successfuly created the file, now run the install. When I run the install, i get the error:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/.napoleon/ljhart/ljhart.com/tests/wordpress-1[1].2-mingus/wordpress/wp-config.php on line 9
I haven’t changed anything in this file, and I belive I chose the right database host. My config settings are:
    database name: unplugged
    user name: dariaknits
    password: password
    database host mysql.ljhart.com
    tableprefix: wp_
Can someone who has set up WP on Dreamhost please help me? I would be eternally greatful.

Check the following lines in your wp-config.php
    define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘password’); // …and password
    define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’);
It is possible that you haven’t closed a quote ‘ or a brace ).
Please check to make sure all the quotes, braces etc are matched and closed.

I was informed yesterday by Earthlink that MySQL will be operational at the end of January 2007. I was told also that Earthlink does not have the mod_rewrite Apache module. Does anyone anticipate any problems using Earthlink in this scenario? Is there anything special that needs to be done other than follow the WordPress installation instructions?

Also, am I being irrational for preferring to host my blogs on my own site? I have a psychological resistance to putting blogs on other sites. I just started using Blogger to publish a blog on my own site via ftp, but it is just too difficult to use Blogger in this fashion, and I’m resistant to being assimilated by the Borg, adding my perfection to Google’s.

Personal opinion: it’s always better to host your own blogs. I have a hosted one, and it’s with a good provider (NOT wordpress.com) – it’s fine, but I do definitely prefer managing my own on my own domains.

As for mod_rewrite: without it, you’ll be stuck with the default ?# sort of permalinks. Don’t know whether that’s a problem or not.

Another personal opinion: you’re better advised to find “real hosting” – companies like Earthlink etc. aren’t set up to be a real hosting business; for them it’s just a way to get more of your money – they keep you at their mercy that way….

Thanks for the feedback. But just for clarification:

What does this mean?: “default ?# sort of permalinks”

What is “real hosting” and what would be an example of it?

It would be rather inconvenient to switch from Earthlink after all this time, but they do seem to be behind the curve.

There is one package that doesn’t require MySQL: Pivot. Any opinions about this?

rd0709 I also use Earthlink, but have my WordPress installation on a free web host, https://www.110mb.com It’s pretty good, plenty of space, mySQL, but slow at times. They at least listen to customers and work at resolving problems. Best of all, they don’t give you an 800 number then forward to to New Delhi in India for support.. Only Great Brittan. ?? Give it a shot.. Best I can tell you. Personally I want as little to do with an ISP as possible. But, that’s me.

default ?# sort of permalinks – the wordpress default, which a lot of people don’t like because it’s not “pretty”, and while I think there’s no downside with SEs, others think there is. It usually shows a page or post number with that question mark in the address bar.

Real hosting is a company which is in business to JUST PROVIDE HOSTING. And I do NOT include godaddy or yahoo in that category.

Real hosts are like a small orange, or bluehost, or network redux; not verizon, not earthlink, not even wildblue. The latter 3 are ISPs and they should stay there.

I have no clue about mysql:pivot. Can’t help you with that.
