• My client purchased a hosting package with earthlink recently. I’m trying to install WordPress manually, but I keep getting the error “Error establishing a database connection”. I’m used to setting up the database through phpmyadmin, but now Earthlink only allows you access to MySQL Manager. There I am able to set up a username/password, but I’m not sure what to do from there since I am not familiar with command prompts. This is what it looks like:

Any suggestions on what to do?

Earthlink also have an instant WP install, which I have tried, but it wont allow you to add WordPress to the root directory which is not ideal.

  • Hi katiekeenan,

I’m a big fan of phpMyAdmin, and I recommend you install phpMyAdmin yourself and then go from there. Even if your host no longer offers it, you should be able to install it from scratch.

A quick search on Google should bring back sites you can use to install phpMyAdmin.

Keep in mind for the database to work, several things must happen.
    1. The database must be created
    2. A database user must be created
    3. The database user must be assigned with certain privileges to the database.
