    When the default WordPress gallery stopped offering square thumbnails anymore I had to find a plugin for it instead. From all the ones I tested, FooGallery offers the most options that are easy to customize. Even in the free version. You might need to switch your light box plugin to FooBox though if you want to use the Simple Thumbnail Gallery option because other lightbox plugins don‘t recognize this version. They work fine with the responsive gallery though which is probably the most common way to use FooGallery.
