I would like to simply export and import all data and settings from one place to another. I’ve been working on this for three days and I still can’t figure it out. it’s the most complicated export and import system I’ve ever seen in my entire life !!!

The only tutorial that I could find, out there was on the official website but it couldn’t help at all :
    https://docs.easydigitaldownloads.com/category/1337-importexport

As far as I can see, the .json file under Downloads > Tools > Import/Export is meant to export and import the general settings of the plugin but in order to export the data you need to go to Downloads > Reports > Export … (not to mention that it’s super funny and this question comes to my mind that why wouldn’t I have them all included under the same general option ?!!!!!!)

Anyways, I opened the Export tab under Records and I came up with these options!!! :

    Export Earnings Report
    Export Payment History
    Export Customers in CSV
    Export Download Products in CSV
    Export Download History in CSV
    Export API Requests in CSV
    Export Sales

WHAT IIIIIS THIS ?!!!!!!!!!!!!! what if I need to export them all ?!!!
ok, I exported them one by one from the source and then tried to import them to the target location but I ran into this stupid message:

    >>> The file you uploaded does not appear to be a CSV file.

It took my a while to figure out that this plugin has some issues and to get rid of the silly message I had to rename the .csv extension to .txt

Then I tried to import them one by one … but wait a second. WHAT IS THIS AGAIN ? two options to import .cvs files ?!!!!

    Import Payment History
    Import Download Products

Then I was like well it has to be something like this :

Import Download Products >> Export Download Products in CSV

Import Payment History >> Export Payment History
Import Payment History >> Export Earnings Report
Import Payment History >> Export Customers in CSV
Import Payment History >> Export Download History in CSV
Import Payment History >> Export Sales

I started with Import Payment History >> Export Payment History but I came up with a drop down list that I had to pick the items one by one for the related fields not to mention that some had different names!!!!!!!!!! OMG !!!!!!!!!! why would I even need to select the options manually ?!!!!!

All in all, I imported the first Payment option and it seemed to work but the customers’ names, emails and some other options were missing. then I was like well I need to import the rest. I tried to import (Export Customers in CSV) but there was no field matching the Customer Value . I imported this cvs ignoring that option but it ruined everything…

I’m still in shock however I have a simple question: how can I easily export and import the entire data ?!!!! is there at least any third party plugins that could do the job ?

  • It sounds like you are trying to migrate an entire store from one site to another, is that correct?

For that kind of operation, it’s actually best to use a tool like WP Migrate DB Pro as that will easily handle migrating your entire database.

The import and export option is split into multiple tools because that is the most common form that store owners need. We certainly appreciate and understand why it would be beneficial to have a full store export / import and it’s quite possible that we will be able to offer that in the future.

Regarding the “not a csv” file error you saw, that is known to happen occasionally when the CSV file was encoded differently than expected. I’ve seen that happen when the file is downloaded, opened in Excel (or similar) and then imported. The process of opening the file in a CSV application can change the encoding such that EDD does not recognize it.

Were you able to get the import done as you needed or would you still like assistance?

It’s incorrect Pippin ! If I was to restore the entire store don’t you think there would be millions of ways to make that happen ?! I’m trying to export the entire edd database from one site and import it to another.

I didn’t do anything. just exported and imported that’s all ! but I recommend in the future releases you simply update the warning message to something like this to avoid confusion :

    >>> The file you uploaded does not appear to be a CSV file. rename it to .txt and try again

    As simple as that !

Yea but then again I figured it out myself. what I did was reset the entire edd store and then export the first option (Export Payment History), rename it to .txt and then import it to another database (selecting from drop down options having different names though!!) and it finally seemed to work. I’m not gonna mess around with other options at all cause I’m so scared !

However still the most complicated Export and Import system ever. and the funny thing is you have all those necessary options in one place but in order to export the database you need to go somewhere else and then go back to the original place to import them back oO !! still one of the seventh wonders of the universe.

Thanks for you assistance anyway !

and what if I need to simply export and import the entire edd database ?!!

Sorry, that’s just not an option we currently offer.

I’ll try and replicate the CSV file type bug so see if I can track that down. Thanks for the heads up!

I really do appreciate the feedback on your experience. It’s really helpful in aiding us in making the system better!

@wordless I wanted to do the same and it ended in nothing than trouble and errors.
Support also almost non-existant. Now, EDD isn’t even working with WordPress anymore as it crashes it….

Beats247, what exactly did you do ? messing with those options without creating a backup is a bad practice. I always make the necessary changes locally and never try anything online.

Here is what I did :

    – Reset the entire edd store
    – Assuming that you have already exported all .csv files, go to Import/Export and then Import the “Export Payment History” by selecting “Import Payment History” button
    – If you ran into the following error just rename the .csv file to .txt :

The file you uploaded does not appear to be a CSV file.

    – Select necessary options from the drop down menus (some have different names) and finalize it

    About their support :
The only reason they replied was because I gave them 1 star and then I gave them 4 stars for their reply but soon I realized that they’re not willing to help you. all they do is simply reply. they would never (barely) assist you in any way. so I switched back to 1 star and never asked for their support again.
