Edit Author Info Along With Post?

Hello WordPress Folks,

I use wordpress to run a website/literary-publication with content that comes from multiple authors. The thing is, nearly all the authors only contribute one time.

I wonder, is it possible — during the creation of a custom post type — to enter information into author fields like name, bio, website, etc. Then, perhaps is it also possible to edit that author information during the post editing?

I would prefer this greatly over the built-in options, which would require me to first create a “user” and then to navigate a long and increasingly cumbersome list of one-time authors.

Are there any plugins that do this already? I couldn’t find any. Or, is it possible to find help to edit my theme or create a plugin to make this happen?
