Edit media to enlarge

I can upload a png file and it shows perfectly on a page. However if I enlarge it by clicking on it in edit mode, then go to display settings and increase the size, after updating in edit mode it appears to have increased in size, but when I view the page all that has happened is that the image is the same size, and there is now white space around it.
How do I get the size of the image to increase?
