I’m thinking of installing this software for a mega-blog that may include as many as hundreds registered contributors.

    Does this software support this?

The highest level administrator (editors) has to be able to edit and delete the post of any contributor (authors). None of the other authors can be able to touch the posts of the other authors.

The editors also have to be able to approve the registration of the authors.

    Does this software support this?

WordPress has Roles and Capabilities that should provide you what you need, plus the Role Manager plugin https://redalt.com/wiki/Role+Manager allows you to customize various Roles.

Newly registered users can join your blog as a Subscriber (mininal capabilities allowed) and then your Editors can promote those users to Authors.
