• I’m a complete novice and someone who knows lots more than I do should be solving this problem, but the non-profit I support is counting on me, so here goes:

About the time 4.1.1 released, and I updated, my edit page appears but the editor pane sits with a spinning load button – forever. My console says WP is up to date as are all my plug-ins and theme. I disabled all plug-ins and ran Safari error console and I get the following:

[Error] Error: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: a[rel=]
    error (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    tokenize (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    compile (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    select (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    fb (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    matches (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    filter (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    w (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    filter (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    initLayout (avia_colorpicker.js, line 948)
    (anonymous function) (avia_colorpicker.js, line 652)
    each (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    init (avia_colorpicker.js, line 651)
    j (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    fireWith (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    ready (load-scripts.php, line 2)
    J (load-scripts.php, line 2)

I have no clue what this means or where to start. I searched the forums and didn’t find anything that I thought would help. Don’t be bashful to tell me this problem is too big for me to solve, or provide meaningful help ( where I can call in some favors). I’m running a third part Enfold Child theme. I’ve had 3 other users on 3 other computers try to edit a page and get the same symptoms. Viewing the page… not problem and all functionality works. I appreciate any help you can provide.

  • If the site is working fine on the front end as you say, I would try replacing the wp-admin directory for starters. It may have had a hiccup during the update and didn’t quite get done right.

It isn’t difficult. Download a fresh copy from https://www.ads-software.com/ and locate the wp-admin folder. You’ll need to use an ftp client (like FileZilla) or your web host’s cpanel (or File Manager) and navigate to the files on the server. Delete wp-admin from the server and upload the fresh copy to the same directory (the same one that contains wp-content.

If that doesn’t do it, I would try manually replacing the entire WP installation in much the same way. Check back here before doing that, though, because not everything gets replaced! For the record (or in case you go for it): do not touch wp-config.php or wp-contents or your site will go belly up.

Thanks Bill. Took several hours to FTP wp-admin files up through Dreamhost webFTP. unfortunately with no change. I get the same errors through Dev error console. Any other ideas beside reloading all the other files?

Several hours? It should take a couple minutes to upload just that one folder of files. I would (in the future) try something like FileZilla if that’s the best Dreamhost’s ftp client can do.

When you replaced wp-admin, did you also keep the plugin folder disabled by renaming it?

I would try renaming your active theme’s folder and let WP use the default theme. If that changes things, then head to support for your theme and see what they can do to help:
    https://themeforest.net/item/enfold-responsive-multipurpose-theme/4519990/support
We can’t really help much with commercial themes since we don’t have access to them. Plus, support is one of the reasons to use premium themes.

Bill, yea, my FTP client wont transfer folders, so I had to mirror the directory, once I figured out to the client runs. I need to know if renaming the active theme then reverting back will in any way change the way the current pages are rendered. I’ve heard “stories” of loosing dropdowns, formatting, etc and I need to avoid that. A prompt reply is appreciated before I give it a try… Jim

Hi Jim. Renaming the theme folder will definitely change the appearance of your site. After all, that’s what a theme is for. However, if the theme is well written, it should only be a temporary change while you look to see if your site is functioning again (minus whatever the theme is bringing to the site). Once you switch the theme back to it’s proper name and re-activate it, it should be as it was before. Most themes will store their settings in the database so it should be fine. Anyway, you need to see if the theme is the problem.

As always, it’s a good idea to make backups of your site files and your database first so you can always get back to where you were if necessary.

Edit: And btw, yes I’ve had a theme forget its widgets after a switch, but they were usually saved in the disabled widgets section of the Appearance > Widgets page.

    Hey Bill,

What does it mean when the tab of the of edit page is not loading? I am trying to edit the appearance of my website but the tab doesn’t want to load, as well as the pages tab.

Hi johanna19. There may be a few reasons for that. But please start a new thread for your issue, as it gets quite confusing to have different issues going in one thread. Your setup and problem are probably not related to this one, plus you’ll get better attention to your issue.

okay. will do so. but you can’t help me?
