edit password protect copy

I am trying to edit the default copy on password protect sites. I found some code to edit the function.php but it caused my site to go to the white screen and i will need to re-install and install my theme again.

does anyone have up to date code to update this. I want to tell them how to get the password – and ideally add an image as well – although this isn’t vital
