Correct, but using that means eliminating the side bar. I want to keep the sidebar. I need both to be just a bit wider than they already are.
so that option won’t work for me.

You can always have a side bar. Just go to appearance>>widgets>>then add content in right or left sidebar. You will have you sidebar back. As far as editing the width of the layout, you need to read the source code (CSS files) and have a webmaster insert custom CSS that will overwrite the template’s CSS…

The best way to make changes like this to a theme is to use a child theme, so your tweaks won’t be overwritten when updating the theme. Here are some guides in case you haven’t made one before:
