Real quick question i’m still pretty new to WordPress and had a Designer create the templates for me.

My first “home” wordpress page (which isn’t my actual Home page due to having a hybrid site with both html and WordPress) is https://www.compspots.com/blog/

If you look it’s my video page which he made a gallery with different categories. Only problem is that when i went to edit the final category “compspots production films” the picture disappeared from that first gallery page as you see. This didn’t happen with any other category. The problem is that there is no page called Blog or Home that i can use to edit.

So how can i replace that picture OR be able to erase that gallery all together and have it be a regular “page” that i create yet still have the same URL address.

Any advice would be great at this point! Thanks

  • There are two ways you could do this.

The first would be to navigate to the index.php file via FTP and edit it directly. This is most likely how it was set up and if you know a little bit about development it would just be a matter of editing that page with some HTML/PHP. The default behavior of WordPress uses index.php as the homepage.

But, I have a sneaking suspicion that the way it was set up, the image is automatically pulled from the category. This would have to be a custom build, but try navigating to “Posts -> Categories” in your admin panel. Click “Edit” on the Compspots production films” category and see if there is a field for you to upload an image. This may solve your problem.

If this doesn’t work and you would like to set up a regular page as your home page, first create that Page in the WordPress admin by navigating to Pages -> Add New and naming the page whatever you would like. When you are finished creating that page, and it looks ok (hit Preview to check out what it will look like) go to Settings -> Reading in the admin. The first option is “Front Page displays”. From there select “A Static Page” and choose the page you created from the dropdown.

This should help with that – https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page

Awesome thanks so much for your quick response i really appreciate it! The Featured image worked to get it back in. it’s nice that you guys take time to help other people out so thanks again it really helps.

One quick last question though. I can change the home page to a static page i know that and i can easily create one but when you create a page it makes you choose a URL address so then when i make that the static home page it will have the address i chose as it’s URL right? Is there any way to change that “home”/blog page to an actual blog page or create a new page that is the .com/blog/ while keeping that URL only because i have 300+ HTML pages that are linked to that address.

    Thanks, Brent

No problem, glad I could help.

Your homepage URL will not change. Once you select which page you want to display as your front page, this page will have the URL (https://www.compspots.com/blog/ in your case) of the homepage, NOT the URL that you chose. So no worries about the links, everything will remain the same.

    Hope that answers your question.

Okay cool so it does change the URL which is sweet! but i can’t get it to display the posts if i just select the Front Page as the “videos page” but then i can choose a posts page as the “videos page” and it doesn’t change anything and if i make them both “videos page” it’s the closest it says Warning can’t have the same but it does list my posts but they are out of order and in full text rather then little summary snippets even when i choose Summary.

Any Ideas? Again your very helpful thanks! here is what it looks like now
