Editing post and how to avoid updating feed

  • I’m using the feedreader Bloglines and see very often new posts although just a typo has been corrected in an existing post. Well, in bloglines you can deactivate the option “Updated Items” in each feed. But if someone is adding something important to her/his post (and not just correcting typos) I want to be informed.
    This is what I experienced when using feeds.
    But now I would like to improve it on my blog :-):
    Whenever I just correct typos, URLs or change a category I do not want that this is being displayed as “updated post” in feedreaders. But if I add some additional info (e.g. an info provided in the comments), the post should appear as “updated” after it has been saved.

    Any suggestions?

    From WP’s perspective, fixing a typo or adding new content to a post is both “updating” the post and as such it will get reported through your Feeds.

    It is probably best practice to spell-check posts before posting them to ensure you don’t have typos..and if you have something of real value to add to a new post, you could just as easily create a new post referencing the old post..

    @cypher: Yes, but if you have some mistakes in tags / categories or want to re-organize your postings, they appear as “modified” in the feed.
    @woo-hoo: thanks, but I need something that does not update the RSS feed. As far as I could see does this plugin not change the behavior of wordpress in regards of updating feeds.

    @all: I would just like to modify a post (e.g. changing its categories), save it and the feed should not be updated. Hmm, perhaps I will write a plugin for this purpose: Having a checkbox “Do not update” would be sufficient.
    Very often I see updated blog posts in my feed reader, in most cases they have changed categories. My feedreader displays it, but it’s not useful if just a category was changed…

    AFAIK it seems not possible using RSS feeds but in Atom exists the atom:updated element which allows this.

    Another option is to modify WordPress itself to keep two versions of every post (web and feed version) and only sync them when user marks the “This is a major change” checkbox. But this looks as too much work for something that should be solved at the feed protocol level.
