Editing the footer in the Appearance>Editor

The theme editor option for a Super Admin is at Themes --> Editor in the Network Admin dashboard. See https://prntscr.com/2eyt5e .

How do I access ‘Admin > Appearance > Editor > Footer

What theme are you using? That “footer” option is not default unless you’re talking about footer theme file, /network/theme-editor.php?file=footer.php.

Individual sites cannot edit theme files. That’s a HUGE security risk and their edits would also change the looks of other sites using that theme.

Hey Patrick, I’m using a theme called WP-Responsive and need to modify the copyright statement in the footer. I believe I am needing to access the footer theme file. I just remember being able to get to and edit the file for the footer via Appearance>Editor before.

That appears to be a premium theme ??

As far as I know, there is not supposed to be an Appearance –> Editor option in Multisite. You’re using the latest version of WP? If you’re a Super Admin there should be a Themes –> Editor in the Network Admin Dashboard. If there isn’t then something has non-default settings.

In looking at the screen shot you provided, I don’t seem to have that option available to me. I click in ‘Themes’ within the Network dashboard and it brings up the three themes I’m using. See the screenshot I’ve linked to.

So should I contact my hosting company about this that I set the multisite with? I’m currently using 3.7.1 of WP.

To be honest, I forgot what that part looked like in previous versions of WordPress. I don’t even see an “Add New” button in your dashboard to add a new theme. So something’s definitely not default.

Not familiar with WPEngine Multisite setup. I guess the automatic upgrades aren’t working.

Is there any particular reason you haven’t updated?

I’ve contacted them (WP Engine) about this. They do my WP software upgrades for me and will be doing so soon.

My guess is they have defined something in your wp-config.php file that limits ability to edit themes. But I’m not sure, could also be a plugin causing this restriction.

In the mean time, you could always log in to your server with sftp/ftp and edit the file — /wp-content/themes/wp-responsive/footer.php. It’s probably safer to do it that way anyway.

I went ahead and accessed the file directly via SFTP as you suggested and updated it that way. Thank you Patrick. ??

Sure ?? I’d be interested in hearing what’s causing the issue. My guess is a security “feature” that WP Engine implemented on your site.

They had some read-only permissions set for editing themes. Thanks again for your help. ??
