Editing the Index.php file for 404 purposes
-
Hello All,
We’re using a custom theme for our WordPress site. I wanted to customize the “Not Found. Sorry it appears…” message in the index.php file. However, when I use the appearance editor, the changes do not appear. The index.php file is contained in the /public_html folder of our HostGator account. It has 644 permissions set and I’m logging-in to as an administrator. This is the only file I have found that has the “Not Found…” text. I modified and uploaded a 404.php file per the advice found here in the support forums–thanks to the author(s) by the way. That was very helpful. Whenever I click on the “visit the shop” link, the “Not Found” message shows-up, as expected. However, within the index.php file, I changed the text to “Page not found” as a start for a more friendly message. The site’s here:
Why is my modification not displaying? Am I not modifying the correct file?
