I can’t find this from the changelog but i noticed if i add a link in the visual editor, it no longer gives me the option to add a title for the link. I can only change/add the clickable link text which is pretty stupid since i can do that before adding the link.

Is there a way to change link text option back to link title?

  • After reading this comment carefully I understand that they are talking about inserting images by URL.

The target was to implement a system that would “scan” the URL you provide in the “Insert from URL field”. If this was an image URL, then it would show you the image options. But, if it was a – non image – URL it would show you the “Link Text” field, and it would then function as the regular Insert URL procedure.

They achieved that, but in the meanwhile they broke the regular insert URL fields, too.

Yeah, sorry, my bad – I think you are correct.

So are they going to fix it? It seems like a pretty big thing to just lose all of a sudden. I am building all of the content in my site around this function and to have it just disappear is a pretty big deal to me. I am now in a place where I have to stop writing until I can figure out a solution and I’m pretty bummed about that.

I’ve looked at a few plugins and nothing seems to match this function.

Apart from using plugins, you can override the problem with simple HTML.

    Like this:
    <a title="This is a tooltip" href="https://www.ads-software.com/">Text</a>

@Embracing Motherhood – I saw your other post about using the title for Amazon products – have you seen any of these?

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/search.php?q=amazon

I’ve tried this plug in and it’s seems so much more complicated than what I was previously able to do. If they aren’t going to fix it, then I’m just going to add the extra information in parentheses, but then I’ll have to go back and change everything I’ve done so far to keep the formatting similar and that is going to be a lot of work.

I wonder if I just wait for a day or two and everything will just work itself out? ??

FYI: That ticket you linked to before is unrelated to this issue. That was a ticket about the Media embed screen.

The actual ticket you should be looking at is this one:
    https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/28206

So this was indeed intentional, and not a bug. I think that removing the title option is not right, just because other editors do so. We are used to it and tooltips highly improve user experience. If the problem is, people who have no HTML knowledge, then it could just be renamed to “On hover text”. So, we would have three fields like the screenshot provided in the ticket. That’s just my opinion.

YES! THANK YOU!!! If they were to leave it and call it “hover text” I think everyone would be happy.

I am seriously so discouraged right now. My sister is a web developer and helped me get my site going (so I know just enough to get by), but I can only imagine if any of her clients relied on the hover text function and then because some people thought it was too confusing and now suddenly it’s just gone.

I think that sometimes developers lose touch with what real people are actually trying to do. I would love to see the hover text function come back. Can I start a petition for that or something?

My javascript skills are not the best, so this may be slightly buggy, but it appears to work for me, so I figured I’d let other take a look at it before releasing it.

This is a plugin to restore the Title field. Simple and easy. WordPress 4.2 only, for obvious reasons.

Let me know how it works, doesn’t work, etc.

This worked for me too, in 2 websites that I tried.

    Thank you Otto

Wow! Otto! This is perfect! You are a genius! It worked perfectly! I am so happy! Thank you!!!!!!!!

Also working for me, without apparently any side effects. Thank you Otto!

Thank you so much, Otto! That fixed the problem for me. I think we can safely say your little fix-it definitely falls under the category of “Must Have Plugins”! ??
