• Hello:

I want to report an apparent bug with wordpress v. 2.3.1 while using IE version 6.0. I use FireFox, but an associate of mine uses IE and complained of the problem. I still have IE laying around so I used it to see if the problem coud be reproduced… It can be.

Editor Problem using IE 6.0( at least that is my version)…

While saving a POST or a PAGE using IE, there is an error with the reload of the script after the save. The result is that the editor does not completely reload and the menu bar disappears. The POST or PAGE is redisplayed but only in the CODE mode of the editor. I turned on my ‘display script errors in IE’ and I got the following messages.

    Line: 42
    Char: 1259
    Error: Expected’}’
    Code: 0
    URL: https://…../wordpress/wp-admin/post-new.php?posted=…

    Line: 44
    Char: 2
    Error: ‘realTinyMCE’ is undefined
    Code: 0
    URL: https://…./wordpress/wp-admin/post-new.php?posted=…

    Line: 100
    Char: 2
Error: Object doesn’t support this property or method
    Code: 0
    URL: https://…./wordpress/wp-admin/post-new.php?posted=…

(I added the … because info is unnecessary)

I search the web and found other references to similar problem….

in the reference above the ‘realTinyMCE’ only appears in the tiny_mce_gzip.php script, so I am wondering if the problem extends from there…

The good news, the problem is not occurring with FireFox and seems to be an IE problem only… but how good is that news when there are so many IE users… oh well…

Anyway… This problem is very serious from a usership standpoint… the saved text does appear to be saved, but it could be misconstrued as being lost and as a serious dent to acceptance of WordPress…

    Thanks…

Since I wrote this two days ago, I have been able to take a little deeper look at the problem. I mentioned that I don’t usually use Internet Explorer(I prefer FireFox), but since an associate did and had this problem with IE, I used my still installed IE v. 6.02800.1106 to look at the problem. Indeed the menu bar was not reloading in the WP Editor having the problem stated in my earlier post(menu bars disappearing because of incomplete reload). Upon looking deeper into that version of IE, I did find that there was a vulnerability with Iframes. So, I down loaded the SP for the fix to that problem… (sp1-KB937143) which appears to be the last comprehensive software patch for 6.0.2800… Of course IE 7.0 is available now… anyway… the patch fixed the disappearing tool bar in the editor (v2.3.1 WP with the advanced tool bar options in the editor)…

However, I still have a question and hope someone can steer me with the correct answer…

When I use FireFox with the Advanced Tool Bar options for Pasting in Text or Pasting in Word Formatted Text, I get a small pop-up window which allows me to paste the text into it first. In the Text Insert pop-up, I can decide if I want to preserve line breaks before I paste it into the POST or PAGE. I like the pop-up because I can decide to cancel the insert if I do not want it in the post. However, using Internet Explorer, I do not get the pop-up window and the text is directly injected into the POST or PAGE text… My question is, is the pop-up insert window supposed to be working with Internet Explorer as well????

I have searched the documentation and found a reference to ‘Word Fix’ which is a plugin offered by Trevor Creech or Trev as he appears to be better known as. In his discussion of ‘Word Fix’ it appears that his plugin reads in the actual POST or PAGE text directly and strips out superfluous HTML tags added by WORD.

The current editor version in WP seems to have advanced that capability with the small pop-up window I have discussed. Is there a dichotomy of how each browser handles the text insert function. Incidentally, I just checked the application with my Opera browser as well, and it provides a pop-up window too. So, is Internet Explorer the odd man out. Does it not work with the small pop-up window???

Maybe this post should appear in another forum based on my updated information… but hey… I am new to these forums and at first it appeared to be a real error in the software… now I am not so sure if it is an error or a browser update and/or a setup issue…

Any comment would be welcomed… IS there an IE user out there that gets the pop-up in the advanced editor options?
