Yesterday I created a new site and a few pages. This morning I made some edits and everything’s fine. This afternoon, the (visual) editor has completely gone on the fritz.

The “enter”/return carriage does not insert a break. If anything, it deletes the previously type character or space. The visual rendering won’t show horizontal lines (although they appear normal in a preview).

I already tried deactivating the only plugin I installed today (Jetpack), cleared cache and cookies. That did no good.

Any ideas? It’s terribly frustrating and I’ve been messing with it for far too long trying to sort it out today.

  • Hi,

I totally understand the frustration. Nothing is more aggravating than when something works and then decides not to work for you. Aside from the plugin that you’ve installed, are there any other changes that you’ve made to the theme or anything like that?

No, that’s the only thing I changed other than editing some of the text on a couple pages and resizing an image. I don’t recall making any changes to the theme (Inkblot).

    – Temporarily switch back to the default WordPress theme; is the symptom still there?

    – If it is, can you share a link to the site?

@clayton James brings up a good point. Try reverting to the stock theme and see if that resolves the issue. If that doesn’t you can also try the in private browsing setting on your browser. In Chrome it’s CTRL+SHIFT+N. If that works, then we can reasonably assume that there may be a plugin on your browser that’s causing some kind of conflict. If that does happen I would recommend going into your settings and disabling the any plugins one by one to continue testing to see which one could be the culprit. I hope that helps.

So deactivating all the plugins and changing to the default Twenty Sixteen WordPress theme seemed to remedy the problem. At least I was able to create the page I wanted and edited it while in that theme.

If nothing else, I can swap themes when I want to edit, but is there a less cumbersome way to circumvent whatever the problem was in the future?

Re-reading all of your comments, I’m fairly convinced that the issue is probalby related to the theme you’re using, rather than the Jetpack plugin.

but is there a less cumbersome way to circumvent whatever the problem was in the future?

Taking into consideration that I’m assuming you probably have not edited any of the InkBLot theme files in a manner that may have accidentally caused the symptom, the only real solution is to fix whatever is broken.

If you really like the theme and want to continue using it, you should either find an updated version or a repair for the theme that’s compatible with the current version of WordPress, or choose a different theme that is. You can post a support question directly to the InkBlot dedicated forum here if you like. There’s a better chance of the developer seeing it and responding that way. InkBlot Support

[edit] Okay. Only because I want to make sure we’re really, really on the same page – this is still bothering me a bit, and I can’t help but feel like we may have missed a step:

“I already tried deactivating the only plugin I installed today (Jetpack)” …and…
“So deactivating all the plugins and changing to the default Twenty Sixteen”

Are you indicating that you only have the Jetpack plugin, or are you indicating that you have several plugins, and that it could still be plugin related simply because all plugins were deactivated and the default theme (Twenty Sixteen) activated at the same time? More specifically, was the symptom present under these exact conditions:

    a) ALL plugins are deactivated

    b) The Inkblot theme is active

What happens in that combination? Is the editor symptom still present?

Just to follow up and close this thread:

I contacted the theme developer. He had received a similar report before but hasn’t updated the code yet. He did give me instructions for editing the functions.php file while corrected the problem I was having.

All’s good now. Thank you all for your insight and assistance.
