• I am perplexed and frustrated with a phenomenon. First, when I select text and choose “Paragraph” for its formatting, the editor does not add a <p> tag in front of the paragraph (nor a </p> tag at end). Thus, I go in and manually add the <p>, and the paragraph looks fine. However, if I come back later and make changes and “Update” the editor removes the <p> tags and all my text runs together! Why might this be happening? How can I fix it? Thanks for any help.

  • Are you using the Text or Visual editor?

When I use the “Visual” editor, and select text and make it “Paragraph” it is not set apart as it should be. All the text flows together when viewed. When I use the “Text” editor tab and add the <p> tags, they remain unless I then switch to “Visual,” where the tags are removed by the editor. I should be able to use the Visual editor and select text, make it “Paragraph” and have it set off from text above and below. It does not work that way.

it is not set apart as it should be

This would be handled by your theme. What theme are you using? Where did you download it from?

I am using the “PureVision” theme. I purchased it from Theme Forest.

I’m sorry but as you are using a commercial theme, you need to raise this issue with the theme’s developer/vendor. We do not support commercial products here.

So you think the theme is causing the problem? Is the editor specific to the theme? I have also tried the CKEditor and it too behaves problematically, albeit with different issues.

So you think the theme is causing the problem?

It could be and that’s why you have to be willing to work with us to find out.

    Try the following troubleshooting steps.
    – Temporarily switching to the Twenty Fourteen theme
    – Deactivating all your plugins
    – Clear your browser’s cookies and cache
    – Re-login and try to replicate the problem

If that does fix it then reactivate your plugins and test again. Then switch back your theme and see if it comes back.

If it is your theme then you’ll need to seek support from that theme vendor.

I will try this and report. I have two other sites that do not have the editor problem and they use a different theme. However, they also do not use many of the plugins used by my main site.

    (@chaplaindoug)

Okay. With all plugins deactivated, theme twenty fourteen, and cache manually cleared (I used IE>Tools>Delete), the editor produced the results I expected when I entered paragraphs and viewed in browser. When I reactivated all plugins (still with theme twenty fourteen) the editor issue of grunging paragraphs all together returned. So it does not look like a theme issue.

The plugins I am using are:

    Configure SMTP
    Google Analytics
    Hana FLV Player
    JQUERY Horizontal Slider
    KVS Player
    NIVO Slider Light
    Optimized Dropdown Menus
    PureVision Shortcode Insert Button
    Search & Replace
    Smart YouTube Pro
    Spam Destroyer
    Viper’s Video Quicktags

I found that when I deactivate the JQUERY Horizontal Slider plugin the problem goes away. However, this is perplexing, as this plugin is active in another site, and the problem does not exist there.

    Any ideas?

I found that when I deactivate the JQUERY Horizontal Slider plugin the problem goes away.

That’s good and exactly what I was hoping to hear with that process of elimination.

I’m not sure why that plugin would cause that problem but it may be that the JQUERY part is interfering with the Visual Editor’s <p></p> part.

The Visual Editor relies on javascript very much so try doing a little more debugging with your browser using these instructions.

If it is a javascript problem with that plugin, which plugin is it? I mean what’s the URL? The author may have a fix for 3.9.1.

This leads to an ancillary question. How can I determine if I am actually using a particular plugin? I suspect that I am not using the JQuery Horizontal Slider plugin, as my site looks fine with it disabled. Is there a way to check if a plugin is actually being used?

How can I determine if I am actually using a particular plugin?

Try looking for active plugins in the Plugins section of your admin area.

    (@chaplaindoug)

I got that much. But I have “active” plugins the functionality of which is not being utilized (like the associated shortcodes are not being used). Hence, their removal would have no net effect on my site. That is what I mean by finding out of a plugin is actually being used versus just being “active.”

Any plugin that is active can have an effect on your site – irrespective of whether you think you are using it or not. Some especially poor plugins continue to have an effect even after they are deactivated.
