I read this older thread and I saw your answer, but I didn’t understand it: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/email-marketing-permission-automatically-opted-out/

My problem is the same as in the thread: Recently, whenever someone uses my MC4WP form, they are immediately opted out of emails. The only way for them to opt-in is to go to my welcome email, scroll down to the bottom, choose manage preferences, and click on email.

I see in that thread that you said, “Our plugin can’t set the MailChimp GDPR fields as MailCHimp did not expose those fields to the API. MailChimp told us to use interest groups instead and ignore the GDPR fields.”

Can you help me understand what you mean? Are you saying that using your form will always have people opted out for email? And that I have to add a box for them to click to accept emails?

I use to have a box on the form for people to click to accept emails, but people kept missing the check box, and then they’d miss the warning that said they missed the check box, and then they’d ask me why they didn’t get subscribed. So I reworded the subscribe button to say clicking it said they wanted emails. I also switched to single opt-in because of similar issues.

But now I’m realizing they are all opted out of emails. I’m not sure what to do. I could ignore it if I’m sure they are going to get emails anyway, but then I won’t know what to do if they really do want to opt-out. In one sense I could just assume they’ll unsubscribe if that’s the case, but you know what they say about assuming…

    Hey @edaghfal,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

By any chance, are you using our old “User sync” plugin?

    Thread Starter edaghfal

    (@edaghfal)

    I’m not sure. How would I know? I have MC4WP version 4.8.1

    Thread Starter edaghfal

    (@edaghfal)

Is there something I can open to see what I have?

    Plugin Contributor Lap

    (@lapzor)

You can either look under Plugins > Installed plugins, to see if you have the MC4WP User-Sync add-on there, or you can look for “Usersync” under the MailChimp for Wp menu.

    Thread Starter edaghfal

    (@edaghfal)

I don’t see “Usersync” in either of those places. All I have is MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress: Mailchimp for WordPress by ibericode. Version 4.8.1

It doesn’t look like I have any add-ons at all.

This is what my form looks like:

    Your First Name
    <input type=”text” name=”FNAME” placeholder=”First or Nickname”>

    Your Last Name

Your email address, required but never shared or published)
    <input type=”email” name=”EMAIL” placeholder=”Your email address” required />

<input type=”submit” value=”Yes, I want to subscribe and get my FREE gift” />

By clicking yes, you agree to my privacy policy and understand you’ll receive emails from me and Lessons in the Little Things through Mailchimp, my automation platform.

    Hate spam? Me, too!
No worries. When you give me your info, I know it’s a sign of trust. So I’ll never share your info without your express permission. Because no one has time for junk emails.

    Hey @edaghfal,

I just tested the form on https://elizabethdaghfal.com/subscribe/.

I have not received any email, but can you let us know if you have “Double Opt-in” enabled or disabled?

    Thread Starter edaghfal

    (@edaghfal)

I have single opt-in enabled, double opt-in disabled.
    Here are my settings:
    Use double opt-in? No

    Update existing subscribers? ? Yes

    Replace interest groups? ? No

Hide form after a successful sign-up? ? No

Redirect to URL after successful sign-ups: https://el……/…../
(obviously there is a proper address there–just truncating it.)

This is what Mailchimp says you did when you subscribed:

    Opened the email Welcome Message.
    7:07 PM
Was Sent the email Welcome Message.
    7:06 PM
    Opted-out of “Email”
    ….· 7:04 PM
    Added via API
    7:04 PM

    Hey @edaghfal,

One reason for this because “Double Opt-in” is not enabled. So MailChimp has no way to confirm if the user actually subscribed themselves or if you added them.

I would recommend first enabling “Double Opt-in” and then to disable any GDPR settings in your List/Audience.

    Thread Starter edaghfal

    (@edaghfal)

    So to clarify,
*are you saying if I use your plug-in, I have to have double opt-in enabled in order have people opted-in to email rather than automatically opted-out? Or are you saying I enable double opt-in and then disable any GDPR settings in my list/audience and then I can go back to single opt-in?
*And when you say disable any GDPR settings in my list/audience, do you mean on the Mailchimp side or in the MC4WP plugin? If you mean the latter, are you thinking I still have something set up in the plugin from when I had double opt-in?
From what I’m hearing, more and more websites are going away from double opt-in and moving to single (even with GDPR rules) because consumers don’t want to do the extra step of waiting for that email, and I was losing subscribers because they would miss the email and then they’d be upset they weren’t subscribed.

    Plugin Contributor Lap

    (@lapzor)

    Hi,

Yes, I recommend to disable the GDPR setting on the MailChimp.com side of things and then try again with single opt-in.

Hope that helps. If you have any questions, please let me know!

    Thread Starter edaghfal

    (@edaghfal)

The problem is I can’t find anything in my setup on the Mailchimp.com side that has the GDPR setting to disable.
When I googled what could be the issue, the only thing I found was the original thread on your forum saying someone else was having the same problem through your plugin.

Could you be specific as to where you think I could have a hidden GDPR setting enabled in Mailchimp that could be interfering with MC4WP? I’ve searched everywhere.

    Plugin Contributor Harish Chouhan

    (@hchouhan)

    Hey @edaghfal,

When you go to the page where you see your Audience details, on the right there should be drop-down field “Manage Audience”. Clicking on it will open the drop-down menu and show a “Settings” option. Please click on it and then on the “GDPR fields and Settings”. If you have enabled this option then please disable it.

Ah, thank you! That was easy. ??
I was looking in all the wrong places, specifically in my campaign sequence itself.

    Thanks again for your patience.
