Email not sending to address when pipes used to select recipient

I have a form on my site that allows users to select the recipient using the code you have supplied on your site, using pipes (|), to separate the addresses.
If the form is completed from a PC, everything is fine and the email is sent correctly.
When I try the same thing from an iPad, the message says it has sent as usual, the content is recorded in the database as usual, but the email is not received by the recipient.
Anyone else with similar issues please? Or is there some code available to make this work correctly?
