• I’m a long-time programmer but new to WordPress. The site is hosted on Bluehost.

I had difficulty sorting out WordPress .com vs .org. Think I’ve got it now but the site seems confused. It sends email to newly registered user with links to .com. I have tried to keep .com out of sight of expected unsophisticated users likely to be more confused than I am.

Initially the WordPress.com primary site was a never to be completed WordPress.com site. I eventually changed that to susanstewart.org as it should be.

Email to approve comments works fine, including internal links. Email to users to complete registration works.

What broken is emal to new users about Confirm your Subscription and Confirm your Subscription to New Comments. Also, nobody appears to get email about new posts.

I’d look into the user/subscriber database but I don’t know how to find it. Jetpack claims there’s only on subscription that snuck in while I had subscription popups turned on. Nothing anywhere about actual users subscriptions.

Thanks for whatever you can point out for me to look into.

    Bob

  • The difference between www.ads-software.com and wordpress.COM is explained here, for example: https://www.ads-software.com/documentation/article/wordpress-org-and-wordpress-com/

Your website is based on the software of www.ads-software.com, hosted by Bluehost.

If I understand correctly, you are having problems with emails from WordPress not reaching the recipient. The reason for this is usually that the receiving server recognises the email as spam and sorts it out. Many large mail providers already do this with emails that have not been authenticated. To send authenticated emails from WordPress, you should use an SMTP plugin. E.g. this one here: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ – there you have to enter the access data to an account of your mail server and then the emails will be delivered more reliably.

Thanks for the quick, clear response. I’m already set up with wp-mail-smtp. I sorted that one out from all the marketing for more power for more money.

I know the messages aren’t falling in a spam filter because so far I’m my own multiple test users. That’s indeed one of my problems. I can’t tell that the messages are even being sent. I suspect the underlying problem is WordPress.com getting into the process where I don’t need or want it.

When I registered two test users, I got email with links to WordPress.com that were non-functional and would be confusing to the website users. I’m doing this for my sister who would have wasted the money she spent to have a blog, completely lost in language and components far outside her experience.

If you see Jetpack with its connection to wordpress.COM as the cause, I would recommend their support forum for questions about this: https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/jetpack/
