emails not being received by customer

I am getting more and more frequent events whereby a customer books our services but does not receive the automated confirmation or reminder emails.
This occurs even when I manually send an updated email from the WP site.
It mainly affects gmail.com email addresses and does not end up in spam folders.
Please help.
